Designed Into Your Landscape From Day One
A fire feature works best when it's planned alongside the patio, the pool deck, and the surrounding hardscape. We design fire pits and fireplaces as part of the larger outdoor build so proportions feel right, transitions flow naturally, and the finished space reads as one cohesive project. The fire feature looks like it belongs, because it does.
Fire Features for the Carolina Coast
On the coast, fire features are about ambiance more than warmth. Most clients choose gas for the clean-on, clean-off experience, no smoke, and the easy pairing with pool decks and outdoor kitchens. We build them to handle salt air, humidity, and storm exposure.

FAQs
Should I choose gas or wood-burning?
Most coastal clients go gas. No smoke, no cleanup, no wood storage, and it pairs better with the kind of entertaining most beach-area homes are built around. Wood-burning is still an option where the lot and local codes allow it.
Do I need a permit for a fire pit or fireplace?
Built-in gas fire features almost always require permits and a gas line tie-in. Built-in wood-burning fire features often require permits depending on the jurisdiction. We handle the permitting in-house.
How close can a fire feature be to the house?
Local codes vary, typically 10 to 25 feet for an open wood-burning fire pit, less for a built-in masonry fireplace with a flue. We design to code and your specific lot.
What materials hold up best in coastal weather?
Salt air and humidity are tough on cheap steel and untreated stone. We use stone veneer, sealed natural stone, and stainless or coastal-rated steel inserts. The investment in better materials pays back in years of additional life.
“Thorpe Landscapes did a great job on my backyard project. Met with Dan and he went over many options. We decided due to the lack of light and topography issue we would do a paver patio for a fire pit and turf instead of grass. This was the right call for the area. He was quick to give paver options and colors.
The crew did a great job on the install and explaining the steps/progress. It was a tighter space in the yard, and they would confirm as work went on with my feedback.
The backyard is now usable! The turf is less maintenance and cost effective! Cant thank these guys enough and it was a great experience. Til the next project!“
