Retaining Walls Built for Mountain Terrain

Asheville slopes are unforgiving. The wrong wall fails after the first wet winter. We build walls that handle real grade changes, real water, and real freeze-thaw.

  • Segmental block retaining walls (Belgard, Allan Block, Keystone)

  • Natural stone retaining walls

  • Boulder walls and stacked stone walls

  • Poured concrete retaining walls

  • Tiered walls for steep grade changes

  • Walls integrated with stairs, patios, driveways, and drainage

  • Engineered walls over 4 feet, with stamped drawings handled in-house

Every wall is designed with proper drainage, geogrid reinforcement where the load demands it, and base prep that holds through freeze-thaw.

Designed in 3D Before We Cut Into the Slope

Our in-house designer builds a 3D model of your slope, the wall, and how it ties into the rest of your property. You'll see exactly what's getting built and why.

For walls that require engineering, we coordinate the stamped drawings as part of the proposal. You don't manage the engineer.

Thorpe Landscape’s Process

Free on-site consultation. We walk the slope, look at drainage and grade, and scope the wall.

  1. 3D design and proposal. You see the wall in your yard before committing. Engineering coordinated if the height requires it.

  2. Permits and materials. Permits pulled in-house, we work together to decide on materials.

  3. Build. Most walls take 2 to 6 weeks depending on length, height, and access.

Where We Build

Thorpe Landscapes builds retaining walls in Asheville, Black Mountain, Weaverville, Hendersonville, Fletcher, Arden, and surrounding Western NC towns.

Where We Build

Do retaining walls in NC require permits or engineering?
In most jurisdictions, walls over 4 feet (measured from footer to top) require engineered drawings and permits. We handle both in-house.

How long does a retaining wall take to build?
Two to 6 weeks from start to walk through, depending on length, height, and site access.

What's the difference between a sentimental block wall and a boulder wall?
Segmental block walls (Belgard, Allan Block) are engineered systems that go higher and tier cleaner. Boulder walls have a more natural mountain look and work well for shorter walls or rustic settings. We build both.

Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always one of three things: no drainage behind the wall, no geogrid reinforcement on tall walls, or a base that wasn't prepped for freeze-thaw. We build to avoid all three.

“Garrett Lee and his whole crew did a terrific job on our hardscape and grading project. They were remarkably responsive to our requests, listened well when we had questions. The lot needed a significant amount of grading which they did to our specifications. They laid two different gravel and stone paths, repaired masonry, created parking areas, and also bushhogged a large, uneven area with efficiency and skill. Overall, I would highly recommend them without reservation.”
